Campaign - Engine Trim Cover Modification

FILE:
SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER
PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

Campaign No.: 2001010001

February 2001

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:
MODEL 163.172 (ENGINE 113.942)
MODIFY ENGINE TRIM COVER FOR INCREASED UPPER RADIATOR HOSE CLEARANCE

Due to thermal expansion of the engine cover, it may be possible for the engine cover to come in contact with the upper radiator hose. This contact may also occur if the engine cover has been improperly reinstalled after maintenance. Subsequent chafing (arrow, Figure 1) could eventually result in a loss of coolant due to a damaged upper radiator hose.

As a preventative measure, please modify the engine cover during the next scheduled maintenance or service of the vehicle.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign, please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.

MODIFICATION PROCEDURE

1. Remove engine cover (2, Figure 2).

2. Create template as per Figure 3.

Notes regarding Figure 3:

1 Template

2 Shaded area (area to be removed).

a 146 mm

b 44 mm

Application:

1 Print template picture, Figure 3

2 Verify template measurements (a, b) (Resize picture to proper measurements as necessary).

3 Cut out template (1, Figure 3).

4 Shaded area (2, Figure 3) on template indicates area on engine cover to be removed.

3. Secure fabricated template onto removed engine cover using tape.

4. Score a demarcation line between shaded (3, Figure 3) and non-shaded area of template using a utility knife.

5. Remove material previously covered by shaded area of template.

6. Remove template from engine cover.

7. Using a suitable tool, carefully smooth out any sharp or rough edges on the engine cover.

8. Next inspect the upper radiator hose for damage and replace upper radiator hose as necessary (see WIS AR20.20-P-3865HC). Should it be necessary to replace the upper radiator hose due to chafing, please submit a separate warranty claim for the upper radiator hose alone.

9. Reinstall modified engine cover, ensure that it is properly located on its mounts.

10. Start and run engine until engine reaches operating temperature (80°C).

11. Lastly, inspect for proper clearance between the upper radiator hose and the engine cover.

Ensure that a clearance of 5 to 10 mm is maintained with the engine at operating temperature.
