Assemble power steering gear in numbered sequence shown, Fig. 38, noting the following:

1. Use special tools to install pinion oil seal into gear housing as shown, Fig. 39.
2. Install inner guide and oil seal as follows:
a. Using tool No. 49-B032-318, or equivalent, place inner guide and oil seal upon installation tool No. 49-B032-319, or equivalent.
b. Position oil seal and inner guide at edge of steering rack pinion using installation tool No. 49-B032-319, or equivalent, then remove tool.

3. Install outer box assembly as follows:
a. Install tool No. 49-B032-313, or equivalent, on steering rack, then install outer box.
b. Tighten box using tool No. 49-B032-307, or equivalent, then remove tools.
4. Inspect hermetic sealing of cylinder as follows:

a. Connect adapter tools to cylinder housing as shown, Fig. 40, then connect a suitable hand vacuum pump to tool hoses.
b. Apply a vacuum of 15.7 inches Hg.
c. If vacuum is not held for at least 30 seconds, install a new oil seal.
5. Install seal ring on pinion shaft using tool No. 49-B032-314, or equivalent, then seat seal ring using sleeve tool No. 49-B032-314, or equivalent.
6. Install pinion shaft assembly on gear housing using tool No. 49-B032-311, or equivalent.

7. Grease and install oil seal and bearing using special tools as shown, Fig. 41.
8. When installing adjusting cover, apply sealant to threads and torque to 43 in.lb., then back off approximately 45°.
9. Using a suitable pull scale, measure pinion preload. If it is not 2.2 - 2.6 ft.lb., adjust by rotating adjusting cover 0 - 45°, then tighten locknut to specifications.
