Parking Brake System: Adjustments
1. Adjust parking brake shoe clearance as follows:a. Working through rotor access hole, turn adjuster 3 to 5 notches in direction opposite arrow on rotor to set shoe clearance to approximately 0.013 inch.
b. Rotate rotor by hand to ensure parking brake shoes do not drag, then install access hole plug.
2. Settle parking brake shoes as follows:
a. Move vehicle to an open area without automobile or pedestrian traffic.
b. Pull parking brake lever upward with a force of approximately 33 lbs., then drive vehicle 45 feet at about 19 mph.
c. Stop vehicle and release parking brake, then allow brakes to cool for five minutes.
d. Repeat settling procedure two more times with another five minute cooling period in between. Performing procedure more than a total of three times will shorten brake shoe life considerably.
3. When parking brake lever is pulled upward with a force of approximately 22 lbs., lever should move through 3 to 5 notches or "clicks". If necessary, adjust parking brake lever travel as follows:
a. Start engine and depress brake pedal repeatedly, then stop engine and remove parking brake lever cover.
b. Rotate adjusting nut at front of parking brake cable as necessary to obtain correct adjustment.
c. Place ignition switch in On position and ensure parking brake warning lamp illuminates when lever is pulled upward through first notch.
d. Ensure rear brakes do not drag when lever is released, then install parking brake lever cover.
