APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
1995 - 96 Millenia with VINs JM1TA221*203573 (2.5L) or JM1TA222*203541 (2.3L) or lower.
DESCRIPTION
To improve serviceability, an automatic transaxle shift control cable bushing has been newly established as a service kit, including bolt, bushing, washer, & cotter pin. If a control cable has a bushing (see note), do not replace the whole shift control cable assembly to repair automatic transaxle shifting concerns or bushing wear. unless deemed necessary.
Note
^ All vehicles with build dates from October 1, 1995 have no shift control cable bushing. Check for bushing before ordering parts.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify the concern.
2. Remove the following parts from the vehicle using the Workshop Manual removal instructions:
^ Battery
^ Dynamic chamber cover [S-models only]
^ Charge air cooler air duct and bolt [S-models only]
^ Air cleaner housing assembly and disconnect hoses and connectors
3. Remove the nut of automatic transaxle bushing from the end of the selector cable (transmission side).
4. Reverse the position of the control cable end and secure to shift lever as shown below in FIGURE 1.
5. Prepare to grind the rivet head of the cable end by covering the throttle body bore (opening) and the surrounding area. This will avoid damage by sparks or debris entering the resonator while grinding.
6. Grind away the rivet head with a die grinder or other tool. See to FIGURE 2.
Warning
^ Check for fuel odor before using grinder. If fuel odor is noticed, STOP, locate and repair leak before proceeding.
^ Wear protective gear when performing this step, i.e., safety goggles & gloves.
7. Remove the old bushing and install the service kit. See FIGURE 3.
8. Reassemble remaining parts in reverse order.
9. Verify repair.
