Assemble power steering gear in numbered sequence shown, Fig. 20, noting the following:
1. When installing back-up washer and oil seal in gear housing, note the following:
a. Lubricate new oil seal with suitable automatic transmission fluid.

b. Install back-up washer and oil seal using special tools as shown, Fig. 21.
c. When installation is complete, shake gear housing and listen for back-up washer rattle; if present, remove washer and seal and reinstall.

2. When installing rack bushing, apply suitable automatic transmission fluid to bushing friction surface, then position installation tool No. 49-H032-325, or equivalent, over bushing to install in sleeve.
3. Inspect hermetic sealing of cylinder as follows:

a. Connect special tools as shown, Fig. 22, with a suitable hand vacuum pump.
b. Apply a vacuum pressure of 15.7 inches Hg; if pressure is not maintained for at least 30 seconds, install a new oil seal.

4. Install seal rings as follows:
a. Coat rings with suitable automatic transmission fluid, then position on pinion shaft assembly.

b. Pass shaft assembly back and forth through special sleeve tool, Fig. 23, until rings are properly seated.
c. Install oil seal on gear side of pinion shaft.

5. Install new oil seal, upper bearing and ball bearing using special tools as shown, Fig. 24 and 25.
6. When installing adjusting cover, apply sealant to threads and torque to 14 - 22 ft.lb., then back off 25 - 30°.
7. After adjusting cover has been installed, measure pinion preload using a suitable pull scale. If preload is not 1.8 - 3.3 lbs., adjust adjusting cover.
