Timing Belt Removal





TIMING BELT REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove the splash shield.
4. Remove the air intake pipe.
5. Remove the upper radiator hose.
6. Remove the water hose (connected to thermostat housing).
7. Remove the P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
8. Remove the generator drive belt.
9. Remove the water pump pulley.
10. Remove the crankshaft pulley plate and crankshaft pulley.

Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley, and can be damaged easily.

11. Remove the pulley lock bolt and pulley boss.





(1) Hold the pulley boss by using SST 49D011 102.
(2) Using the SST 49D011 102, loosen the pulley lock bolt.
(3) Remove the bolt and the pulley boss.

12. Remove the ignition coil and high-tension leads and sparkplugs.
13. Remove the PCV valve.
14. Remove the cylinder head cover.
15. Remove the lower, middle and upper timing belt cover.
16. Remove the timing belt.

(1) Install the pulley boss.
(2) Install the pulley lock bolt.








(3) Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks.
(4) Do not turn the crankshaft after aligning the timing marks.
(5) Remove the pulley lock bolt and pulley boss.





(6) Mark the timing belt rotation for proper reinstallation.
(7) Loosen the tensioner lock bolt.





(8) Protect the tensioner with a rag. Pry the tensioner outward with a bar.
(9) Tighten the lock bolt with the tensioner spring fully extended.
(10) Remove the timing belt.

17. Remove the belt tensioner and tensioner spring.





18. Measure the tensioner spring free length. If not within the specification, replace the tensioner spring.

Free length: 59.2 mm (2.33 in)
