Pinion Gear: Adjustments

BEARING PRELOAD
1. Remove the bearing race from the bearing cover by using a pin punch and a hammer.

2. Align the bearing cover with guide bolts as shown and press it with the Special Service Tool (SST). Tighten the bearing cover bolts to 10.8 - 13.7 Nm (95.5 - 121 inch lbs.).
3. Remove the bearing race and adjustment shims from the bearing housing by using a pin punch and a hammer.

4. Press the bearing race into the bearing housing by using the SST.
5. Set the SST onto the converter housing.
6. Turn the selector to eliminate the gap between its two halves.

7. Set the output gear and bearing race onto the SST.

8. Set the four SST (collars) on the converter housing in the positions shown.

9. Set the bearing housing on the output gear. Install the four SST (bolts) and tighten them to 19 - 25 Nm (14 - 18 ft. lbs.).
10. Turn the SST (selector) by using the SST (bars) to increase the clearance (arrow) until it no longer turns. This is to seat the bearing race.

11. Turn the selector in the opposite direction until the preload is eliminated (gap is reduced).
12. Install the SST and a pull scale or torque wrench on the output gear.

NOTE: Read the preload when the output gear starts to turn.

13. Adjust the clearance of the SST (selector) to obtain the specified preload/pull scale reading. Preload should be within 0.02 - 0.88 Nm (0.2 - 7.8 inch lbs.) and the reading on pull scale should be within 0.2 - 8 N (0.05 - 1.9 lbs.).

NOTE:
^ Measure the clearance around the entire circumference, and select shims equivalent to the maximum clearance.

^ The maximum allowable number of adjustment shims is seven.

14. Measure the clearance as shown.
15. Remove the bearing housing and the SST.
16. Remove the bearing race from the bearing housing.
17. Install the required shim(s) and press the bearing race into the bearing housing by using the SST.
18. Install the bearing race into the bearing cover.

19. Install the bearing housing. Tighten to 19 - 25 Nm (14 - 18 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the SSTs (preload adapter, preload attachment) onto the output gear.

NOTE: Measure several times and calculate the average value.

21. Verify that the preload/pull scale reading is within the specification. If not, return to step 3. Preload should be within 0.02 - 0.88 Nm (0.2 - 7.8 inch lbs.) and the reading on pull scale should be within 0.2 - 8 N (0.05 - 1.9 lbs.).
22. Remove the beaning housing and output gear assembly.
