Temperature Gauge: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 18, Checking Water Temp. Gauge (323/Protege):

Continue checks for at least two minutes each to correctly judge condition. Allowable indication error is twice the width of the needle.
1. Disconnect electrical connector from water thermosensor and connect red lead of checker 49 0839 285 to connector and black lead to body ground.
2. Turn ignition switch to On position and proceed as follows:
a. On models less tachometer, set checker to 15.2 ohms. Gauge should indicate Hot.
b. Set checker to 143 ohms. Gauge should indicate Cold.
c. On models with tachometer, set checker to 19 ohms. Gauge should indicate Hot.
d. Set checker to 153 ohms. Gauge should indicate Cold.

3. If gauge indicates correctly, replace water thermosensor.
4. If gauge does not indicate correctly, proceed to next step.
5. Remove instrument cluster.
6. Apply battery voltage to terminal 2L and ground terminal 2E, Fig. 18, then connect red lead of checker to terminal 3L and black lead to ground.
7. Repeat steps 2a through d.
8. If gauge indicates correctly, repair wiring harness.
9. If gauge does not indicate correctly, replace water temperature gauge.
