EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR LA4AEL TRANSAXLES

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
1994 626/MX-6 (with 4 cyl. engines and automatic transaxles) from vehicle introduction through August 31, 1994

DESCRIPTION

An exchange program has been established for the first year of service on the new LA4AEL transaxle. This transaxle is used in 1994 626/MX-6 (4cyl.) models. This program will provide quick response to customer complaints and feed back information leading to early transaxle failure.

The program is effective from the time of vehicle introduction through August 31, 1994. During this period, the preferred method for repairing automatic transaxle failure is replacement.

A Technical Assistance Center and toll free "800" number have been established to administer the program. Assistance will be available Monday through Friday (except holidays) 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST by dialing 1 800 820-6262. If you hear a recording, leave a message and a technical assistant will return your call.

NOTE:
Exchange units are shipped with the following materials:

Shipping plugs to prevent ATF spills during transportation (transaxles sent by ground transportation will have ATF installed)

Information packets containing "Installation Instructions", "Core Return Instructions", "Bill of Lading" and an "Information Return Card".

Confirm that the above material is in the exchange unit information package. If not, call the "800" number for replacement.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. When you have determined that an exchange unit may be needed, be sure you have performed the following diagnostics and record the findings on the diagnostic recording form as shown.

a) Check ATF level at normal operating temperature. If low, fill to the proper level and check for leaks.

NOTE:
If leaks are found, call the Technical Assistance Center at 1 800 820-6262 prior to repair.

b) Test drive the vehicle to verify the customer complaint.

c) Check harness connectors for proper installation at the following locations:

- Manual Level Position Sensor (MLP)

- Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor JSS)

- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

- Transaxle Solenoid Body Connector

NOTE:
If no problems are found, perform steps "d" through f". If the connectors are disconnected, reconnect and verify that the complaint is fixed. If the complaint is not fixed, perform steps "d" through "f".

d) Retrieve fault codes using the "Quick Test" and the Super Star II Tester (P/N 49 UN01 056)

e) Perform the pin point test on any fault codes found. Refer to section K2 of the workshop manual.

NOTE:
Repair only those codes that indicate problems outside the transaxle.

f) If the fault codes indicate internal transaxle failure, confirm codes using the LA4AEL transmission tester, harness and overlay (P/N 49 UN01 71, 089, 090, 091, and 092).
