Subject:
LA4A-EL TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK AT TORQUE CONVERTER HUB SEAL
APPLICABLE MODELS
1994-96 626 / MX-6 with an automatic transaxle and 4 cylinder (2.0L) engine.
DESCRIPTION
Transmission fluid leaking from the bell housing may be caused by:
^ a dislodged torque converter hub seal tension (garter) spring
^ a damaged torque converter hub seal rubber or
^ a blocked drain back port.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and repaired according to this bulletin.
NOTE:
^ Dislodged tension spring may be caused by improper hub seal installation.
^ Damaged to the converter hub seal may be caused by scratches or nicks on the mating surface between the hub seal and torque converter.
^ Blockage at the drain back port may be caused by flashing deposits.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Verify the concern.
2. Record all preset audio stations.
3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
4. Remove the transaxle. Refer to section K2 of the workshop manual.
5. Remove the torque converter and oil pump shaft. Refer to Fig. 1.
6. Remove the torque converter hub seal.
^ Use SST or equivalent as shown in Fig. 2.
7. Inspect the drain back port for blockage. Refer to Fig. 3.
^ If the port is blocked, use a machinists (90 degree) pick or equivalent to remove as much flashing as possible.
NOTE:
Residue flashing that falls into the transmission will be trapped by the filter.
8. Install a new hub seal.
^ Apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the tension spring area prior to installation. This will help prevent the tension spring from dislodging during installation.
^ Use the SST and a lead-filled dead blow hammer. Refer to Fig. 4
CAUTION:
Installing the seal with other than the appropriate SST may damage the seal.
9. Confirm that the tension spring is not dislodged. Refer to Fig. 4
^ Verify the spring location by looking between the stator support and the seal.
10. Install oil pump shaft to the end of the turbine shaft.
11. Inspect the torque converter hub surface.
^ If seal grooves, nicks and/or scratches are present, replace the torque converter.
^ If no damage is present, proceed to step 12.
12. Install torque converter and transaxle.
13. Connect negative terminal.
14. Test drive vehicle and verify repair.
15. Reset audio stations and clock.
