Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
1. On models with audio anti-theft system, obtain radio deactivation code prior to disconnecting battery ground cable, then deactivate system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove lower cover, then disconnect clockspring and combination switch electrical connectors.
4. Remove attaching nuts and disconnect air bag module. Do not store air bag module face down.
5. Remove steering wheel retaining nut, then place match marks on steering wheel and shaft for later assembly.
6. Using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel. Do not strike steering shaft or puller with a hammer, as the collapsible shaft may collapse.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Set front wheels in a straight ahead position.
b. Turn clockspring connector clockwise until it stops. Do not force it.
c. Turn clockspring connector counterclockwise 2 3/4 turns.
d. Align marks on clockspring connector and outer housing.
e. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 29 - 36 ft.lb.
