Transaxle Replace
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.2. Drain transaxle fluid into suitable container.
3. Remove wheel and tire assembly, then the splash shield.
4. Remove resonance duct, then disconnect air meter electrical connector and remove air cleaner assembly.
5. On 1993 models equipped with 1.8L engine, remove strut bar.
6. Remove battery cover and battery, then disconnect engine harness.
7. Remove battery tray, then disconnect speedometer cable and remove clip, snap pin and washer as necessary.
8. Disconnect selector cable, then the inhibitor switch and solenoid valve electrical connectors.
9. Disconnect front harness, then remove harness bracket.
10. On models equipped with 1.8L engine, disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
11. Disconnect throttle cable, then the oil cooler inlet and outlet hoses.
12. On models equipped with 1.8L engine, remove fuel filter.
13. Remove starter.
14. On models equipped with 1.8L engine, remove starter bracket and transverse member.
15. Remove front exhaust pipe.
16. Remove tie rod end nut, then the tie rod end using ball joint puller tool No. 59 G017 503, or equivalent, noting the following:
a. Do not damage dust seal.
b. Temporarily install locknut to prevent thread damage.
c. Do not reuse cotter pin.
17. Remove stabilizer, then the ABS sensor cable brake pipe clip.
18. Supporting engine with suitable engine support, remove engine mounting member.
19. Remove driveshaft as follows:
a. Remove clinch bolts from lower arm ball joints, then pull lower arms downward to separate from knuckles.
b. Separate lefthand driveshaft from transaxle by prying with suitable bar inserted between shaft and transaxle. Do not damage oil seal.
c. Slide differential side gear holder tool No. 49 G030 455, or equivalent, into deferential side gear. If differential side gear holder tool is not installed, differential side gears may become misaligned.
20. Remove engine mount No. 4.
21. On models equipped with 1.8L engine, proceed as follows:
a. Hold driveplate using screwdriver inserted through service hole on converter housing side.
b. Loosen torque converter nuts evenly and gradually, then remove nuts through service hole on oil pan side.
c. Remove undercover.
d. Hold driveplate using suitable screwdriver.
e. Loosen torque converter nuts evenly and gradually, then remove nuts.
22. Remove engine mount No. 2.
23. Lean engine toward transaxle by loosening engine support hook bolt, then support transaxle with suitable jack.
24. Remove transaxle bolts, then the transaxle, Fig. 6 and 7.
25. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten torque converter nuts to specifications evenly and gradually.
b. Torque engine mounting member A bolts to 27 - 38 ft.lb., then torque B bolts to 47 - 66 ft.lb., Fig. 8.
