Fuel Injector: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Provide for precise computer controlled fuel delivery.

OPERATION
Injectors are electrically operated solenoid valves that open when energized. They get battery power from the main relay when the engine is cranking or running, and are energized when the powertrain control module engine (PCME) completes the circuit to ground. Injection timing and duration are determined by the PCME. Injectors are energized either all at the same time once for each ignition pulse (engine cranking), or sequentially following the firing order (engine running).

CONSTRUCTION
The six (side-feed type) injectors are constructed of materials that resist corrosion. They consist of a fuel inlet with filter screen, an electric solenoid with connector, and a discharge nozzle tip. They are installed in the fuel distributor so that the nozzles protrude slightly into the manifold. They are sealed by O-rings and held in place by a cover/harness connector fastened to the fuel distributor with screws.
