Evaporative Emissions System: Description and Operation
View: Evaporative Emission Control System:
PURPOSE
System prevents fuel vapors from being discharged into the atmosphere. Under specified conditions, stored vapors are routed into the intake system and burned.
OPERATION
The purge solenoid valve is controlled by duty signals from the powertrain control module engine (PCME). Vapors stored in the charcoal canister are purged into the intake system when these conditions are met:
- Engine at operating temperature.
- Vehicle being driven in gear.
- Accelerator pedal depressed (idle switch OFF).
- Heated oxygen sensor functioning properly.
CONSTRUCTION
System consists of a separator, check-and-cut valve, two-way check valve, charcoal canister, purge solenoid valve, necessary hoses, the PCME and its input devices.
