PURPOSE
The three-way catalytic converter reduces CO, HC and NOx emissions by stimulating chemical reactions.

OPERATION
Catalyst metals within the converter stimulate chemical reactions which break down exhaust gas into carbon dioxide and water. Converter must warm up to operating temperature before operating properly.

CONSTRUCTION
Outer metal case contains a ceramic matrix coated with platinum and rhodium compounds. There are three catalytic converters on this model. Two warm-up converters are mounted (one per engine bank) as part of the exhaust manifold assemblies and the main three-way converter is bolted to the "Y" pipe under the vehicle.
