GENERAL SYSTEM OPERATION
The Powertrain Control System consists of various sensors, switches and a Powertrain Control Module Engine (PCME). The sensors and switches act as inputs to the Control Module.

The sensors and switches (inputs) send the Control Module data concerning engine operating conditions. The Control Module interprets this data in order to control various output devices. The output devices control air intake amounts, the amount of fuel injection, fuel injection timing, evaporative emissions, idle-up, deceleration and ignition timing. The Control Module has varying amounts of control over these (outputs).

By controlling these outputs, the Control Module can meet the different operational and driveability needs of the engine as it experiences different operating conditions and requirements.

Engine Control System Inputs
- Air conditioning sensor.
- Barometric absolute pressure sensor
- Braking signal (Stop light switch)
- Crankshaft position sensor No.1 SGC & SGT signals (in distributor)
- SGC signal represents TDC for cylinders No.1 & No.4
- SGT signal represents crankshaft angle in 60° intervals
- Crankshaft position sensor No.2 NE signal (near crank pulley)
- NE signal also represents crankshaft angle in 60° intervals
- Data link connector TEN terminal (initial set signal, for self diagnosis initiation)
- E/L operation (represents electrical load)
- Coolant fan relay
- Headlights
- Blower motor
- Rear window defroster
- EGR function sensor
- Engine coolant temperature sensor
- Heated oxygen sensors
- Ignition switch
- START position signal
- ON position signal
- Intake air temperature sensor (in volume airflow sensor)
- Knock sensor
- Neutral and Clutch Pedal Position Switches (MTX)
- Steering pressure sensor
- Throttle position sensor
- Throttle valve opening (TVO) signal
- Idle switch (closed throttle position signal)
- Vehicle speed sensor (signal buffer)
- Volume airflow sensor

Engine Control System Outputs
- Air conditioner relay (A/C cut off)
