Subject:
TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SYSTEM PERFORMANCE - DTC 628

APPLICABLE MODELS
1994 - 95 626 / MX-6 with a 2.0L engine and a LA4A-EL transaxle.

DESCRIPTION

Diagnostic Trouble Code 628 and harsh shifts may be due to reduced hydraulic pressure within the torque converter clutch circuit. These symptoms may be accompanied by a flashing "HOLD/OD light. Torque converter slippage occurs when the hydraulic pressure falls below the torque converter lock-up requirements.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, repaired according to this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify concern.

2. Connect the NGS tester (SST 49 T088 0A0).

3. Retrieve and record all DTCs.

4. Clear all DTCs.

5. Diagnose and repair all conditions other than TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) system performance (DTC 628) or transaxle over temperature (DTC 657).

NOTE:
Pay special attention to any TSS Turbine Speed Sensor) or VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) related DTCs.

6. Connect the transmission tester (SST 49 UN01 071) with the LA4A-EL cable and overlay (SST 49 UN01 089 and 49 UN01 090)

7. Place transmission tester in bench mode.

NOTE:
The vehicle must be parked to perform bench-mode testing.

8. Press the TCC activate button.

^ If the light turns green, proceed to step 9.

^ If the light does not turn green, recheck all connections and retest.

a) If light turns green, proceed to step 9.

b) If the light does not turn green, replace the solenoid body and repeat the test.

NOTE:
If the light does not turn green when retesting, recheck all connections or refer to the wiring diagram for troubleshooting information. Repair as necessary and proceed to step 9.

9. Test the TCC solenoid resistance values using the transmission tester TCC and VPWR terminals.

^ If the resistance is within specification, replace the transaxle assembly with a remanufactured unit Contact MASH (except Mazda Great Lakes Dealers).

^ If the TCC resistance is not within specification replace the solenoid body.

NOTE:
The TCC solenoid may be a low or high impedance type depending on production date and/or service history.

Verify the type of solenoid by checking the color of the solenoid body bulkhead connector.

Black = Low Impedance (1.0 - 2.0 ohms)

Natural/Beige High Impedance (12.5 - 19.0 ohms)

CAUTION:
If transaxle replacement is necessary, flush oil cooler to remove any accumulated friction material. Failure to properly flush the oil cooler may result in a premature failure of the remanufactured transmission.
