Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation

The Purge Control Solenoid Valve, located left center on the firewall, is an ECU controlled component of the evaporative emission control system.

The solenoid valve is operated by duty signals from the ECU. The quantity of evaporative fumes introduced into the engine and burned is controlled corresponding to engine operating conditions.

Evaporative fumes are purged from the charcoal canister under these conditions:

^ Engine at operating temperature.
^ Vehicle being driven in gear.
^ Accelerator pedal depressed (idle switch "OFF").
^ Oxygen sensor functioning properly.
