DESCRIPTION
All 1991 626/MX-6 non-Turbo and RX-7 Turbo models use a modified Nippondenso compressor. These compressors include a redesigned shaft seal and related parts. The modified compressors have been built since June 1990.
The modified compressor components will not interchange with the former compressor.
A serial number sticker is located at the cylinder head illustrating build-date. See table for build-date breakdown.
To replace the shaft seal in the modified compressor, refer to the Repair Procedure contained in this bulletin.
NOTE:
SST's mentioned in this bulletin are contained in the Nippondenso A/C Service Kit SST (0000 41 0812-15).
REPAIR PROCEDURE
CAUTION:
A/C components may be under very high pressure. Follow all Cautions and Warnings in Section "U" of the appropriate Workshop Manual.
Removal
1. Remove the clutch assembly. See Section "U" of the appropriate Workshop Manual. Remove the shaft key. Remove the felt and snap ring.
2. Slide the shaft seal remover SST (0000 41 0812-12) over the shaft. Figure 2.
3. Turn the shaft seal remover until the projections fall into the grooves. Turn the SST about 30~ counterclockwise. Figure 3.
4. Pull the SST out to remove the shaft seal.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse the old shaft seal.
Installation
1. Slide the seal protector SST (0000 41 0812-13) over the shaft. Figure 4.
2. Lubricate and slide the new shaft seal over the SST. Figure 5.
NOTE:
Ensure the shaft seal is installed in the correct direction. Figure 5.
3. Place a 21 mm (13/16 in) deep socket over the shaft. Figure 6.
4. Push the shaft seal down until it bottoms. Remove the seal protector SST. Figure 6.
NOTE:
Use hand pressure ONLY to install the shaft seal.
5. Install the snap ring, the felt, and the shaft key. Figure 7.
CAUTION:
Ensure the snap ring is installed with the tapered edge down (large diameter side up).
6. Install clutch assembly and charge system. See Section "U" of the appropriate Workshop Manual.
