Fuel Tank: Description and Operation

Fuel Tank Assembly:

The fuel tank, located under the rear of the car, stores fuel. The fuel pump is located inside, installed from the top as part of the fuel gauge unit. The tank also has vents for vapor recovery hoses. The tank is made of light gauge sheet metal, usually galvanized. The filler cap is a sealed type and pressure inside the tank is equalized with atmospheric pressure through the check and cut valve (listed seperately in this section), to prevent damage to the tank from internal pressure becoming too high or too low.
