Subject
ATX LINE PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT
Bulletin No. 008/91
Issued 1/25/91
Revised
DESCRIPTION
After design modifications, line pressure adjustments during assembly may not have been properly performed. Misadjustment directly affects transmission shifting performance. The vehicles listed in the VIN range below may have excessive inner throttle cable slack. It is extremely important to identify these vehicles in dealer inventory and correctly readjust line pressure during Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).
APPLICABLE VIN RANGE
'90 323/Protege: JM1BG2 * * * L0185245 - 191212 June 1 - September 24, 1990
'91 323/Protege: JM1BG2 * * * M0200001 - 225511 June 1 - September 24, 1990
NOTE: SOHC models only.
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
1. Remove the square head plug L (line pressure port) and install the SST (oil pressure gauge set).
2. Shift into "P" range and start the engine. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and adjust the idle speed if necessary.
Idle Speed:
750 +/- 50 rpm (with parking brake applied)
3. Loosen bolt (1) and bolt (2).
4. Verify that the throttle is fully closed.
5. Tighten bolt (1).
Tightening Torque:
7-10 N-m (70-100 cm-kg, 61-87 in.lb.)
6. Pull the throttle cable in the direction of arrow
(B) until the line pressure exceeds the specified pressure.
Specified Pressure:
402-422 kPa (4.1-4.3 kg/sq.cm, 58-61 psi)
7. Push the cable in the direction of arrow (A) until the line pressure decreases to the adjustment pressure.
Adjustment Pressure:
412 kPa (4.2 kg/sq.cm, 59 psi)
NOTE:
If the line pressure will not decrease to the adjustment pressure, tighten bolt (2) with the line pressure at point (X) as shown in the illustration.
IMPORTANT:
Point (X) represents the lowest attainable pressure (closest to the specified adjustment pressure) without creating slack in the cable.
8. Tighten bolt (2).
Tightening Torque:
7-10 N-m (70-100 cm-kg, 61-87 in.lb.)
9. Turn off the engine and verify that the throttle cable moves smoothly.
10. Restart the engine and accelerate slightly, then run it at idle.
11. Verify that the line pressure is within specifications.
Specified Pressure:
402-422 kPa (4.1-4.3 kg/sq.cm, 58-61 psi)
12. If the specified pressure is not correct, repeat from step 3.
13. Remove the SST (oil pressure gauge set) and install a new square head plug L.
Tightening Torque:
5-10 N-m (50-100 cm-kg, 43-87 in.lb.)
14. After completing the adjustment, put a small white paint mark on the throttle cable housing as shown in the illustration.
