Variable Induction System: Description and Operation
Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS):
The Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS) creates a variable intake air path length in the intake manifold and dynamic chamber. The system improves the resonance induced inertia charging effect, yielding higher torque and a wider torque band. Intake track length is controlled within the dynamic chamber and intake manifold by opening the shutter valves above 5000 rpm and closing closing them below 5000 rpm.
A vacuum controlled shutter valve actuator opens and closes the shutter valves. An ECU operated solenoid valve regulates vacuum to the actuator. When the solenoid is not energized, vacuum is applied to the actuator (below 5000 rpm) and valves are closed. When the solenoid is energized, vacuum is cut (above 5000 rpm) and the actuator allows valves to open. The in-line vacuum storage chamber ensures that the actuator receives adequate operating vacuum under all engine operating conditions.
