Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation
Fig. 130 Evaporative System:
The Purge Control Solenoid Valve, located on the right side of the engine compartment near the strut tower, is an ECU controlled component of the evaporative emission control system.
The solenoid valve is operated by duty signals from the ECU. The quantity of evaporative fumes introduced into the engine and burned is controlled in relation to ECU input signals. The ECU is also programmed with preset values for purge quantity corresponding to operating conditions. Evaporative fumes are purged from the charcoal canister under these conditions:
1. Engine at operating temperature.
2. Vehicle being driven in gear.
3. Accelerator pedal depressed (throttle sensor off idle).
4. Oxygen sensor functioning properly.
