Oil Pump: Service and Repair


Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove timing belt pulley. Refer to ``Timing Belt, Replace.''
3. Remove oil pan as previously described.
4. Remove oil strainer.
5. Remove baffle plate, if equipped, and the oil pump.




Disassembly, Inspection & Assembly

1. Remove oil pump cover attaching bolts and the cover.
2. Remove inner and outer rotors.
3. Remove snap ring, then the plunger assembly.
4. Remove oil pump seal.
5. Inspect for distortion or damage to pump body or cover, wear or damage to plunger or weak or broken plunger spring.
6. On 4-122 engine, measure clearance between outer gear tooth tip and crescent. Clearance should not exceed .013 inch (.35 mm).
7. On 4-122 engine, measure clearance between inner gear tooth tip and clearance. Clearance should not exceed .016 inch (.4 mm).
8. On 4-133 engine, measure clearance between inner rotor tooth tip and outer rotor. Clearance should not exceed .007 inch (.18 mm).
9. On all engines, measure side clearance. Side clearance should not exceed .004 inch (.1 mm).
10. Measure outer gear or rotor to pump body clearance. Clearance should not exceed .008 inch (.2 mm).
11. Inspect oil seal for wear or damage and, if replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Using suitable tool, pry out old seal.
b. Using pipe or similar tool with O.D. of 1.77 inch (45 mm), press new oil seal in until it is flush with front end of pump body.
12. Reverse remainder of disassembly procedure to complete assembly.

Installation

1. Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply thin coating of grease to O-ring and install it in position, Fig. 32.
b. Apply coat of suitable sealant to oil pump installation surface as shown, Fig. 32. Be careful not to get sealant in oil hole.
c. Coat oil seal lip with engine oil, then install seal, being careful not to damage lip.
d. Torque oil pump attaching bolts to 14-19 ft.lbs. (19-25 N-m).
