Extension Housing: Service and Repair
MANUAL TRANSMISSION EXTENSION HOUSING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle.
3. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the transfer case.
4. Drain the transmission fluid.
Note:
^ To maintain initial propeller shaft balance, mark the propeller shaft centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange so they may be installed in their original positions.
5. Mark the propeller centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange.
6. Remove and support the rear propeller shalt.
7. Use a transmission jack to support the transmission.
8. Remove the transmission mount to cross-member nuts.
9. Remove the six crossmember bolts.
10. Remove the nuts, then remove the crossmember.
11. Remove the transmission bolt and reposition the exhaust bracket.
12. Lower the transmission to access extension housing bolts.
13. Use SST T74P-77248-A or equivalent to remove the extension housing rear oil seal.
14. Remove the bolts.
15. Remove the extension housing.
16. Apply a small bead of silicone to the surface of the case.
Note:
^ The extension housing must be installed within four minutes after applying silicone.
17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
18. Use SST to install the extension housing seal.
19. Add specified amount of transmission oil.
20. Warm up the engine and transmission, inspect for oil leakage and inspect transmission operation.
