Suspension: Service Precautions

02-10 GENERAL PROCEDURES

SUSPENSION PRECAUTION
Wheels and Tires Removal / Installation
^ When a wheel is removed, retighten it to 135 Nm {10 kgf-cm, 100 ft lbs }.

Suspension Links Removal / Installation
^ Tighten any part of the suspension that uses rubber bushings only after the vehicle has been lowered and unloaded.

Note:
^ Unloaded is defined as fuel tank full; engine coolant and engine oil at specified levels; spare tire, jack and tools in designated position.

Power Steering Components Removal / Installation
^ If any power steering fluid line has been disconnected anytime during the procedure, add ATF or equivalent (e.g., Dexron-II), bleed the fluid line, and inspect for leakage after the procedure has been completed.

ENGINE/TRANSMISSION MOUNT NEUTRALIZING PROCEDURE
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Loosen, but do not remove, the engine and transmission mount fasteners.
3. Lower the vehicle.
4. Operate the vehicle in forward and reverse.
5. Raise and support the vehicle.
6. Tighten the engine and transmission mount fasteners.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Perform a road test.

EXHAUST SYSTEM NEUTRALIZING PROCEDURE

Caution:
^ Make sure the system is warmed up to normal operating temperature, as thermal expansion can be the cause of a strain problem.

Warning:
^ Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which is harmful to health and potentially lethal. Exhaust system leaks must be repaired immediately. Never operate the engine in an enclosed area.

Exhaust system components are hot.

Note:
^ Neutralize the exhaust system to relieve strain on mounts which may be sufficiently bound up to transmit vibration as if grounded.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
1. Loosen all hanger attachments and reposition the hangers until they hang free and straight.
3. Loosen all flange joints.
4. Tighten all the hanger clamps and flanges (tighten the manifold flange joint last).
(1) Verify adequate clearance to prevent grounding at any point in the system.
(2) After neutralization, the rubber in the exhaust hangers should show some flexibility when movement is applied to the exhaust system.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Perform a road test.
