Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Component Test
Functional Test - Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) Mode

NOTE: If the front RH or the rear safety belts are to be tested, a passenger must be used.

1. Fasten the safety belts and proceed to a safe area.
2. Attain a speed of 8 km/h (5 mph).

WARNING: The driver and passenger must be prepared to brace themselves if the retractor does not lock.

3. Test the safety belts.
1. Grasp the shoulder harness and prepare to lean forward.
2. Make maximum brake application without a skid.

NOTE: Do not jerk on the safety belt webbing when carrying out this test.

3. Lean forward slightly when the brake application is made.

4. The safety belts should lock up with minimum webbing extension.
5. If both shoulder straps lock up, the safety belt assemblies are functioning correctly. Should either or both retractors fail to lock up at the 8 km/h (5 mph) speed, repeat the test at a constant 24 km/h (15 mph) speed. (This test must be carried out with a RH front or rear passenger if the RH front or rear outboard safety belts are to be tested.)

NOTE: If any of the shoulder belts do not lock up, the sheet metal in the retractor's mounting surface may need to be returned to its original shape and structural integrity.

6. If any of the shoulder belts do not lock up at the 24 km/h (15 mph) test, return the vehicle for repair of the safety belts.

Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) - Evaluation of Lockability and Release

WARNING: After any vehicle collision, the safety belt system at all outboard seating positions (except driver, which has no "automatic locking retractor" feature) must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the "automatic locking retractor" feature for child seats is still functioning properly, in addition to other checks for proper safety belt system function. A belt and retractor assembly must be replaced if the safety belt assembly's "automatic locking retractor" feature, or any other safety belt function, is not operating properly when checked according to the procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to replace the belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions.

7. Extend the safety belt to latch the tongue into the buckle across an empty seat without slack in the safety belt, with the seat in the full down and rearmost position, seat back in an upright position, and if applicable, the D-ring adjusted in the full down position.
8. Pull the shoulder belt to full extension to engage the retractor's automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature. Then allow the belt to retract freely in the ALR mode, and let the retractor force set the proper belt tightness.
9. Pull on the shoulder belt to check that the belt has remained in the ALR mode. If the belt is not locked, install a new belt and retractor assembly. The safety belt should remain locked in the ALR mode across an empty seat.
10. To verify that the safety belt still automatically disengages from the ALR mode properly, with the D-ring adjusted to the full up position, if applicable, unlatch the safety belt tongue from the buckle and allow the safety belt to retract to its stowed position. Pull on the shoulder belt to verify that the retractor assembly has converted automatically out of the ALR mode. If the belt remains locked in the stowed position, a new belt and retractor assembly must be installed. The safety belt should extract freely.
