Overdrive Shaft Gears Disassembly / Assembly
OVERDRIVE SHAFT GEARS DISASSEMBLY / ASSEMBLYDISASSEMBLY NOTE
CAUTION: Planetary must be replaced. Do not restake them.
1. Before installing a planetary assembly, the shaft retaining pins should be checked for adequate staking. Use a new planetary assembly if either of the following conditions exist. Check the pins and shafts in the planetary assemblies for loose fit and/or complete disengagement.
NOTE: Individual parts of the planetary carriers are not serviceable.
2. Inspect the pinion gears for damaged or excessively worn teeth, and for free rotation.
3. Inspect the overdrive one-way clutch inner race for scoring.
4. Inspect the inner and outer races for scored or damaged surface areas where the rollers contact the races.
5. Remove and inspect the No.2 overdrive planetary thrust bearing on the nose of the overdrive planetary gear carrier assembly.
6. Remove the overdrive sun gear.
(1). Remove the coast clutch to overdrive carrier adapter.
(2). Remove the overdrive sun gear.
NOTE:
- Inspect the overdrive sun gear for damaged or worn teeth.
- Note the location of the alphanumeric stamping on the overdrive clutch adapter for assembly purposes.
7. Inspect the No.12 bearing for damage.
ASSEMBLY NOTE
1. Install the No.2 overdrive planetary thrust bearing.
NOTE:
- Thoroughly clean all parts and blow dry with moisture free compressed air.
- Use petroleum jelly to hold the overdrive planetary thrust bearing (No.2) in place.
2. Install the overdrive planetary gear carrier into the center shaft and front ring gear.
CAUTION: Use care not to bend or damage the trigger wheel.
CAUTION: The alphanumeric stamping on the overdrive clutch adapter must face toward the overdrive sun gear or the coast clutch assembly will not fit into the transmission.
3. Install the overdrive sun gear.
(1). Install the overdrive sun gear.
(2). Install the coast clutch to overdrive carrier adapter.
