85. Install new locknut on the band adjustment screw.
86. Tighten overdrive band adjustment screw and back off overdrive band adjustment screw exactly two and one half (2 1/2) turns and hold that position.
NOTE: The wrench will click at the specified torque.
CAUTION: The overdrive servo must be installed prior to band adjustment.
87. While holding the overdrive band adjustment screw stationary, tighten the overdrive band locknut using a 19 mm wrench.
CAUTION:
- Do not allow intermediate band adjusting screw to back out. Band strut could fail out of position.
- Install, but do not tighten, a new locknut on the band adjustment screw. Apply petroleum jelly to the locknut seal.
88. Install new nut on the band adjustment screw.
89. Tighten intermediate band adjusting screw and back off intermediate band adjusting screw exactly two and one-half (2 1/2) turns and hold that position.
NOTE: The wrench will click at the specified torque.
CAUTION: The intermediate servo must be Installed prior to band adjustment.
90. While holding the intermediate band adjustment screw stationary, tighten the intermediate band locknut using a 19 mm wrench.
CAUTION: Install new 0-rings on the 16-pin electrical connector. Coat the 0-rings with petroleum jelly.
91. Position the transmission case (16-pin) electrical connector into the case bore.
(1). Press the transmission case (16-pin) electrical connector through the case until a click is heard.
NOTE: Make sure that the tab is in the lock position.
CAUTION: Do not overstretch the retaining spring.
92. Install the 16-pin electrical connector retaining spring.
CAUTION: Align the slot on the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector with the slot In the 16-pin electrical connector.
93. Install the TSS sensor electrical connector into the transmission case (16-pin) electrical connector.
(1). Connect the TSS sensor electrical connector.
(2). Insert the TSS sensor electrical connector wires into the retaining slot in the 16-pin electrical connector.
94. Install the SSTs into the transmission case.
CAUTION:
- Make sure main control valve body gasket is aligned.
- Make sure that the manual valve is correctly aligned with the manual valve Inner pin when the main control valve body is installed.
95. Position the main control valve body into the transmission case.
96. Loosely install the four main control valve body bolts.
NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.
97. Loosely install the two main control valve body bolts.
NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.
98. Loosely install one main control valve body bolt.
NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.
99. Remove the valve body guide pins.
100. Loosely install the sixteen main control valve body bolts.
NOTE: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.
101. Tighten the main control valve body bolts in the sequence shown
102. Install the manual control valve detent lever spring.
(1). Position the manual control valve detent lever spring on the main control valve body.
(2). Install the manual control valve detent lever spring bolt.
NOTE: Perform the following steps only if reverse band servo piston and rod is to be checked.
103. Remove the reverse band servo piston and rod from the case.
104. Install the reverse band servo piston and rod into the servo bore along with a reverse band servo return spring.
105. Install SST.
(1). Install a new reverse servo separator plate cover gasket.
(2). Tighten the three SST screws.
106. Tighten the SST adjusting screw.
107. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry on the transmission case.
(1). Position the indicator on the piston pad.
(2). Set the dial indicator to zero.
108. Back out the servo gauge adjusting screw until it bottoms out on the tool. Record the distance the servo piston traveled.
NOTE: If the piston travel in this step is 3 - 5.6 mm (0.120 - 0.220 in), it is within specification. If the piston travel is greater than 5.6 mm (0.220 in), use the next longer reverse band servo piston and rod. If the piston travel is less than 3 mm (0.120 in), use the next shorter reverse band servo piston and rod.
109. Use the above procedure to check the piston travel with the newly selected reverse band servo piston and rod (if required) to make sure that the piston travel is 3 - 5.6 mm (0.120 - 0.220 in). Remove the servo gauge and the reverse band servo return spring.
(1). Grooves are located on reverse servo rod. Install select servo and rod assembly.
CAUTION: Make sure the test spring is removed after this step.
110. Install the reverse band servo cover and reverse servo separator plate cover gasket.
(1). Position the reverse band servo cover and reverse servo separator plate cover gasket on the transmission case.
(2). Loosely install the reverse band servo cover bolts.
111. Tighten the reverse band servo cover bolts in the sequence shown.
112. Connect the solenoid electrical connectors.
(1). Connect shift solenoids SS1, SS2, SS3 and CCS (4R44E only), and SS4 (5R55E only) electrical connectors.
(2). Connect the torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) electrical connector.
(3). Connect the electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid electrical connector.
CAUTION: Excessive pressure may break the locating pins.
113. Install wiring loom protector and guide.
(1). Align the pins in the holes of the solenoid clamps and gently push down.
CAUTION: Make sure that both oil strainer 0-rings are properly installed on the oil strainer prior to Installation.
114. Install the oil strainer 0-rings.
(1). Coat the oil strainer 0-rings with ATF.
115. Install the oil strainer.
(1). Position oil strainer on the main control valve body.
(2). Install bolt.
116. Install the SST (4R44E only).
117. Perform the static testing engine off procedure; refer to the tester manual (4R44E only).
118. Disconnect the SST (4R44E only).
119. Install the transmission oil pan and transmission oil pan gasket.
(1). Loosely install the 18 transmission oil pan bolts.
120. Tighten the transmission oil pan bolts.
121. If necessary remove the transmission from the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500B or equivalent and place on a flat surface.
122. Remove the fixture arm of the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture and the Holding Fixture Adapter T93T-77000-AH or equivalent.
123. Install a new extension housing gasket.
NOTE: Use petroleum jelly to hold the gasket in place.
124. Install the parking pawl assembly.
(1). Install the parking pawl shaft into the extension housing.
(2). Install the parking pawl.
(3). Install the parking pawl return spring.
NOTE: The guide cup is press-fit into the extension housing and is not serviced separately.
CAUTION: Make sure the parking lever actuating rod is correctly seated into the transmission case parking rod guide cup.
125. Install the extension housing.
(1). Install the extension housing and extension housing gasket.
(2). Install the extension housing screws.
(3). Install the extension housing stud.
CAUTION: The lube hole in the bushing must be aligned with the lube groove in the extension housing.
126. Align lube hole with the lube groove in extension housing. This groove is located at the 3 o'clock position when viewed from the rear.
NOTE:
- Install the extension housing bushing only if removed in disassembly.
- Remove any burrs from the extension housing counterbore.
CAUTION: Tool will bottom when bushing is in the proper position.
127. Using Extension Housing Bushing Replacer T77L-7697-F or equivalent, install the extension housing bushing.
(1). Position Extension Housing Bushing Replacer.
(2). Install extension housing bushing.
128. Position new extension housing seal with drain hole in the 6 o'clock position.
129. Using Align Extension Housing Seal Replacer T74P-77052-A or equivalent, install a new extension housing seal.
(1). Align Extension Housing Seal Replacer.
(2). Install the extension housing seal.
130. Install the digital transmission range (TR) sensor.
(1). Position the digital TR sensor on the transmission.
(2). Loosely install the bolts.
(3). Rotate the manual lever to the neutral position (two detents rearward).
131. Adjust the digital TR sensor using the SST.
(1). Install SST.
(2). Tighten the bolts.
132. Install the manual control lever.
(1). Install the manual control lever.
(2). Install the manual control outer lever nut.
133. Install transmission heat shield and nut (5R55E only).
NOTE: Inspect 0-ring for damage. Replace if damaged.
134. Install the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor.
(1). Install the 055 sensor.
(2). Install the 055 sensor screw.
CAUTION: The splines of the input shaft are not the same length on both ends. The shaft end with the shorter splines goes into the oil pump.
135. Install the input shaft.
136. Check that the oil pump gear seal ring is seated.
(1). Insert SST into the oil pump drive gear.
CAUTION:
- Do not damage the oil pump gear 0-ring when installing the torque converter.
- Make sure the converter hub is fully engaged in the front pump support and gear and rotates freely. Do not damage the hub seal.
- If the torque converter slides out, the hub seal may be damaged.
137. Lubricate the converter hub with clean transmission fluid.
WARNING: The torque converter can fall out if the transmission is tipped.
138. Use Torque Converter Handles T81P-7902-C or equivalent to install the torque converter by pushing and rotating.
139. Make sure the torque converter is installed to specification.
NOTE: Dimension "A" should be 10.23 - 14.43 mm (0.43 - 0.56 in).
140. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with grease.
141. Before installing transmission, make sure that the transmission cooling system (line and coolers) have been thoroughly flushed. If contamination cannot be removed or proper flow cannot be obtained, replace cooler(s) and/or lines.
142. Install Torque Converter Holding Tool on case.
