Overdrive Servo
OVERDRIVE SERVO (4R44E) OR FRONT SERVO (5R55E) REMOVAL/INSTALLATIONRemoval Note
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the control valve body.
4. Remove the shift cable.
1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.
2. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.
5. Remove the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor. Refer to Powertrain Management; Computers and Control Systems; Transmission Position Switch/Sensor.
6. Remove the transmission modulator heat shield (5R55E only).
7. Remove the overdrive/front band locknut and unscrew the overdrive/front band adjusting screw.
- Discard the overdrive/front band locknut after removal.
8. Remove the catalytic converter.
Caution Servo cover is under spring pressure.
9. Using SST, remove the overdrive band servo cover retaining ring.
1. 1nstall the SST and compress the overdrive/front band servo cover.
2. Remove the overdrive/front servo cover retaining ring.
- Slowly remove tension on the J-hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.
10. Remove servo cover, piston and spring by gently pushing on hook-type tool. Use a small piece of cardboard of similar material to prevent tool from damaging passage.
Installation Note
1. Assemble the overdrive/front band servo cover, overdrive/front band servo piston, and the servo piston spring.
1. Install the overdrive/front band servo piston into the overdrive/front band servo cover.
2. Install the servo piston spring on the overdrive/front band servo piston.
Caution Do not damage O-ring during installation. Do not press servo cover and O-ring past relief hole in case, or O-ring damage may occur.
2. Install the overdrive/drive band servo assembly into the transmission case.
- Lubricate the overdrive/front band servo cover O-ring with Petroleum jelly.
3. Use SST to install the overdrive/front band servo cover retaining ring.
1. Install SST and compress the overdrive/front band servo cover.
2. Install the overdrive/front servo cover retaining
4. Install the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor. Refer to Powertrain Manangement; Computers and Control Systems; Transmission Position Switch/Sensor.
5. Install the shift cable.
1. Install the shift cable.
2. Install the shift cable to the manual control lever.
6. Install the control valve body.
7. Adjust the overdrive/front band; refer to Band, Automatic Transmission; Adjustments.
8. Position the transmission modulator heat shield on the transmission and install the nut (5R55E only).
9. Install the catalytic converter.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Connect the battery ground cable.
