Disassembly and Reassembly
REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE AND RING GEAR (STANDARD) DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLYDisassembly Note
1. Remove the differential case.
2. Remove the 10 ring gear bolts.
Caution Care should be taken not to damage the ring bolt hole threads.
3. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive the ring gear off.
Note The speed sensor ring cannot be reused once removed.
4. Remove the speed sensor ring if required.
5. If required, use a 2-Jaw Puller And Bearing Remover SST 49 H033 101 to remove the differential bearing.
6. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
7. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
8. Rotate and remove the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers.
9. Remove the differential side gears and the differential pinion thrust washers.
Assembly Note
1. Use rear axle lubricant meeting specification API-GL5 to lubricate the differential side gear thrust washers and the differential side gear journals.
1. Position the differential side gear thrust washers on the differential side nears.
2. Position the differential side gears.
3. Use rear axle lubricant to lubricate the differential pinion thrust washers and the differential pinion nears
4. Engage the differential pinion gears opposite the differential side gears.
5. Rotate the differential pinion gears to align with the differential pinion shaft bore.
6. Insert the differential pinion shaft.
1. Align the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the hole in the differential case.
Note If a new pinion shaft lock bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with Loctite or equivalent prior to installation.
7. Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt and tighten finger-tight.
8. Use Differential Side Bearing Replacer SST 49 UN01 074 to install the new differential bearings on the differential case.
Caution Make sure that the notches on the case flange and the anti-lock speed sensor ring are aligned.
9. Press the new anti-lock speed sensor ring and the ring gear on the differential case.
10. Install the ring gear bolts.
1. Apply sealant to the ring near bolts.
11. Install the differential case.
