Standard Differential

AXLE HOUSING COVER (STANDARD) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. Raise and support the vehicle.

Note Empty the lubricant into a clean container for reuse.

2. Remove the 10 axle housing cover bolts and drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing.
3. Remove the axle housing cover.

Caution Make sure the machined surfaces on both the rear axle housing and the axle housing cover are clean and free of oil before installing the new silicone sealant. The inside of the rear axle must be covered when cleaning the machined surface to prevent contamination.

4. Clean the gasket mating surface of the rear axle and the axle housing cover.
5. Apply a new continuous 3.18 - 4.76 mm (1/8 - 3/16 inch) bead of sealant to the axle housing cover.

Note The axle housing cover must be installed within 15 minutes of application of the silicone, or new sealant must be applied. If possible, allow one hour before filling with lubricant to make sure the silicone sealant has properly cured.

6. Install the 10 axle housing cover bolts.
7. Install the axle housing cover.

Note Service refill capacities are determined by filling the rear axle with the specified lubricant (6.4 - 14.3 mm (1/4 - 9/16 inch) below the bottom of the filler hole.

8. Fill the rear axle with 2.4 liters (5 pints) lubricant and install the filler plug.
9. Lower the vehicle.
