Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

CONTINUOUS MEMORY CODES

NOTE: Do not disconnect the battery to clear Continuous Memory codes. This will erase Keep Alive Memory (KAM) information and may cause driveability problems.

1. Run KOEO Self-Test according to Quick Test step 3.0.
2. When service code display begins, deactivate test:
a. Super Star II tester: unlatch center button and return to "UP" position.
b. Analog voltmeter: remove jumper wire from between Self-Test Input (STI) connector and Signal Return Pin of Self-Test connector.
c. "Check Engine" light: remove jumper wire from between Self-Test Input (STI) connector and Signal Return Pin of Self-Test connector.
3. Continuous Memory codes will now be erased from ECA computer memory.

KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM)

The ECA computer stores information about vehicle operating conditions that is utilized to compensate for component tolerances. When oxygen sensor, injectors, idle air bypass valve or throttle position sensor are replaced, KAM should be cleared to erase information stored from the original component. To clear KAM, disconnect the negative battery terminal for a minimum of 5 minutes.

After KAM has been cleared, the vehicle may exhibit driveability concerns. It is necessary to drive the vehicle 10 miles (further with some applications) to allow the ECA computer to relearn values for optimum driveability and performance.
