Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.2. Remove upper and lower intake manifolds.
3. Remove rocker arm covers, refer to ROCKER ARM.
4. If left cylinder head is being removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove accessory drive belt.
b. If equipped, remove A/C compressor.
c. Remove power steering pump with bracket and position aside.
d. Remove spark plugs.
5. If right cylinder head is being removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove accessory drive belt.
b. Remove alternator and bracket.
c. Remove ignition coil and bracket assembly.
d. Remove spark plugs.
6. Remove exhaust inlet pipe and manifolds.
7. Remove rocker arm shaft assembly.
8. Remove pushrods in order so they can be installed in their original positions.
9. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.

10. Reverse procedure to install, then alternately tighten intake manifold and new cylinder head bolts as directed below.
a. In the sequence shown in Fig. 2, torque head bolts to 44 ft. lbs.
b. Hand tighten retaining nuts and bolts, then, in the sequence shown in Fig. 3, torque bolts 3-6 ft. lbs.
c. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence to 59 ft. lbs., then torque intake 6-11 ft. lbs.
d. Rotate head bolts in sequence an additional 80-85°, then torque intake 11-15 ft. lbs.
e. Finally, again torque intake bolts 15-18 ft. lbs.
