DESCRIPTION
When the vehicle is parked on a steep incline (20~ grade or higher). it may not start and the automatic transmission shift lever may not move from the "P" position.
Parking on in incline increases the amount of play in the transmission linkage. When this occurs, the park/neutral circuit in the inhibitor switch does not close, the shift lock mechinism does not disengage, and the vehicle will not start.
To correct this problem, the following modifications have been made:
1. The contact point that unlocks the shift lock mechanism in the inhibitor switch has been increased as of May 1, 1991 production (VIN JM*LV*21*M0348547*).
2. The round configuration of the manual plate between the "P" range and the "R" range has been changed as of October 1, 1991 production (VIN JM*LV*21*N0414408*).
Vehicles produced prior to May 1, 1991 having this condition should have the inhibitor switch and manual plate replaced with the new parts. Vehicles produced between May 1, 1991 and October 1, 1991 having this problem should have the manual plate replaced with the new part.
All repairs should be performed according to the instructions in the Workshop Manual, Section K-1.
