Camshaft
1. Check camshaft for wear or damage, then measure cam lobe height. If cam lobe height is less than 1.634 inch (41.5mm) for intake or 1.645 inch (41.8mm) for exhaust, replace camshaft.2. Check camshaft runout. If runout exceeds .0012 inch (.03mm), replace camshaft.
3. Measure outer diameter of each camshaft journal. If journal diameter is not 1.1787-1.1797 inch (29.940-29.965mm) on journal Nos. 1 and 5, or 1.1776-1.1785 inch (29.910-29.935mm) on journal Nos. 2, 3 and 4, replace camshaft.
4. Check oil clearance of the camshaft and camshaft caps as follows:
a. Remove any oil, or dirt from the journals and bearing surfaces.
b. Set the camshaft on the cylinder head.
c. Apply plasti-Gauge on top of journals in the axial direction.
d. Place camshaft caps and rocker arm shafts in position, then tighten to specifications.
e. Remove camshaft caps and measure oil clearance at each cap.
f. Maximum oil clearance should not exceed .006 inch (.15mm). If clearance is more than maximum, replace cylinder head.
5. Check camshaft endplay, if endplay exceeds .008 inch (.20mm), replace camshaft or cylinder head.
