Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 19 Cylinder Head Bolt Removal Sequence:






1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine coolant and release fuel pressure.
3. Remove accelerator cable, air intake pipe and resonance chamber.
4. Remove A/C drive belt and idler.
5. Remove high tension leads, then spark plugs.
6. Remove upper radiator hose and brake vacuum hose.
7. Remove oil cooler water hose, canister hose and fuel hose.
8. Remove oxygen sensor connector, then the solenoid valves.
9. Remove emission harness connectors, then cylinder cover.
10. Turn crankshaft pulley until timing mark of camshaft pulley is 90° to the right. Ensure timing mark is aligned with indicator pin, then remove distributor.
11. Lock crankshaft pulley with tool No. 49S120710, then remove distributor drive gear.
12. Remove service cover from the chain cover. Push chain adjuster sleeve in toward the left and insert pin into lever hole to hold it.
13. Secure camshaft pulley with a wire, then remove camshaft pulley from the dowel pin.
14. Remove intake manifold bracket, then exhaust pipe and bracket.
15. Remove cylinder head bolts in two steps in sequence shown in Fig. 19.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all components to specifications.
b. Apply engine oil to cylinder head bolt threads.
c. Torque head bolts in two or three steps in sequence shown in Fig. 20, to 59-64 ft. lbs.
d. Tighten remaining cylinder head bolts (A), Fig. 20, to 12-17 ft. lbs.
