Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation
Fig. 4 MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light):
The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) is equipped on California and Federal vehicles, and installed on the instrument panel Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 Malfunction Indicator Light:
When the self-diagnosis check connector is grounded, the malfunction indicator lamp on the dash panel, Fig. 6, indicates a pattern the same as the buzzer of the checker tool (flashes). If a malfunction is detected and the connector is not grounded, the lamp will light steady until the malfunction recovers or is corrected. See "Code Extraction" for correct procedure.
On Federal specification vehicles, the MIL also comes ON and stays on at 60,000 and 80,000 miles to indicate that maintenance of the emission control system is required. At this time, the MIL will not indicate a warning code (even with the check connector grounded) until the maintenance reminder is reset.
RESET PROCEDURE
To reset the MIL at 60,000 miles, remove the male connector (B) from the female connector (BrW) and switch it to the (G) female connector (hanging next to the (BrW) connector).
At 80,000 miles reverse the connections.
