Forward Clutch

Disassembly
1. Remove the No. 6 forward clutch thrust washer.
2. CAUTION: Pry evenly and do not locate screwdriver ends on or near forward clutch check ball to prevent component damage.
Remove the forward clutch assembly.
3. Remove the forward clutch plates.
1 Remove the retaining ring.
2 Remove the pressure plate.
3 Remove the clutch packs.
4. Disassemble the forward clutch cylinder.
^ Install the clutch spring compressor.
^ Use the snap ring pliers and remove the snap ring.
5. Clean and reseal the forward clutch.
1 Remove the clutch return spring.
2 Remove the clutch piston and seal assembly.
3 Remove the inner piston seal.
Assembly
1. NOTE: The lip on the seal faces toward the bottom of the cylinder. Make sure the check ball moves freely.
Install a new inner piston seal.
2. NOTE: Lightly coat all the seals with petroleum jelly during assembly.
Install the piston assembly using the Forward Clutch Lip Seal Protector.
3. Install the clutch return spring.
4. CAUTION: Do not fully compress the return spring retainer.
Install the snap ring using the snap ring pliers and Clutch Spring Compressor.
5. Install the forward clutch plates.
1 Install the clutch packs.
2 Install the pressure plate.
3 Install the retaining ring.
6. Measure the clearance between the retaining ring and the clutch cylinder lip.
Selective Retaining Ring:
7. If the clearance is not within specification selective retaining rings are available. Check the clearance after installing the correct selective retaining ring.
