Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
Special Tools:
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Remove the front wheels.
4. Remove both halfshafts.
5. NOTE: The differential seal is a two-piece constructed seal.
Remove left differential seal.
^ Install the Front Cover Seal Remover and 5 1/2 inch forcing screw (part of Crankshaft Seal Replacer/Cover Aligner) into left differential seal.
6. Remove the LH differential seal.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the front cover seal remover.
3 Remove the metal protector from the LH differential seal and remove protector from tool.
7. Remove the rubber portion of the LH differential seal.
1 Install Front Cover Seal Remover and 5 1/2 inch forcing screw into left differential seal and rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the front cover seal remover.
3 Remove the rubber portion of the seal.
8. Install the Step Plate Adapter with Front Cover Seal Remover and 5 1/2 inch forcing screw into the RH differential seal.
9. Remove the RH differential seal metal protector.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the front cover seal remover.
3 Remove the metal protector of the seal.
10. Remove the rubber portion of the seal.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the front cover seal remover.
3 Remove the rubber portion of the seal.
Installation
1. Using the Output Seal Replacer, install the left hand differential seal.
2. Using the Output Seal Replacer and the Output Seal Replacer Pilot; install the right hand seal.
3. Install the halfshafts into the vehicle.
4. Install the front wheels.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Reconnect the battery around cable.
