ISSUE
The "Check Traction Control" lamp in the message center may illuminate on some vehicles. When performing diagnostics, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) U1009 and/or PO34O may be present in the ABS/traction control module with no other associated codes. This is due to the software strategy within the vehicle's electronic module network.

ACTION
There is one known situation where DTC U1009 may be present with no related codes in the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) system. Refer to the following Diagnostic Information for details.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION

DTC U1009 Invalid or Missing Data for Engine Torque. This code in itself is not indicative of a fault with the ABS/traction control module, therefore there are no published Pinpoint Tests in either the Workshop Manual or the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual. This code is generated by a fault elsewhere in the network - typically in the EEC system - so whenever DTC U1009 is present, be sure to look for related codes in other modules.

^ If the camshaft sensor or circuit results in a fault, DTC U1009 will be stored in the ABS/traction control module, and Code P0340 will be stored in the EEC system.

^ However, if this fault is intermittent and does not recur for several on/off ignition key cycles, the P0340 code may be erased from the EEC memory although the U1009 may still be present in the ABS/traction control module.

^ In this situation, it is recommended that the harness be thoroughly inspected and wiggle-tested for evidence of opens or shorts which may contribute to an intermittent loss of the camshaft position sign.

^ One area to inspect closely is where the camshaft sensor circuits are routed across the power steering return line near the front cylinder head. If there is outward evidence of the circuits contacting the steering hose (even with no external chafing evident) there is a possibility of the wiring being damaged internally. If this is the suspected cause, obtain new terminals from Box # 3, Drawer # D44 of the Ford Terminal Repair Kit (refer to TSB 97-24-14 for additional details). These terminals have a 15 cm (6") pigtail which will easily replace the suspect sections of wiring.
