ISSUE:
This TSB article highlights and clarifies HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter system service information that is often overlooked due to unfamiliarity with this new feature.
ACTION:
Review the following information to become familiar with the various features, operation and service of the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter system.
The HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter is a remote control transmitter that is integrated into the vehicle visor. The unit will replace up to three (3) remote controls used to operate garage doors, gates, security systems, or home/office lighting systems.
The following items are covered in this article:

PROGRAMMING
NOTE:
IF PROGRAMMING TAKES PLACE WITHIN RANGE OF THE GARAGE DOOR OPENER OR GATE SYSTEM TO BE OPERATED, MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE AND OBJECTS ARE OUT OF THE PATH OF THE DOOR OR GATE.
- PROGRAMMING The HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter can be programmed either at the dealership or at the customer's home. It does not need to be within range of the system (e.g., garage door opener) that it will be operating in order to program.
1. Factory default or any previously entered codes should first be cleared before programming. Clearing is performed by holding the two (2) outside buttons of the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter for 20 seconds until the LED on the transmitter flashes rapidly, then releasing the buttons. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.
2. Once the system is cleared, select and press the button that is to be trained on the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter. The LED will flash slowly. While continuing to press the button on the transmitter, hold the original transmitter (e.g., garage door opener) 25-51 mm (1-2") from the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter, then depress the button on the original transmitter. Hold both buttons until the LED on the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter begins to flash rapidly. This should take between 1-30 seconds. Refer to Figure 3.
3. Additional transmitters can be programmed by repeating Step 2 for the selected button.
4. Customers should retain their original transmitter in a safe place, should future reprogramming become necessary.
- ERASING CHANNELS - To erase all three (3) programmed channels, hold down the two (2) outside buttons on the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter for about 20 seconds until the LED begins to flash, then release both buttons. Individual channels cannot be erased, but can be reprogrammed by following the previous procedure for programming.
TROUBLESHOOTING
The HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter Helpline is operated by the manufacturer of the unit, and can answer any programming questions. Call (800) 355-3515, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM (EST) Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM-6:00 PM (EST) Saturday.
- GENERAL TIPS
^ Make sure the system is cleared once before programming the first transmitter
^ It the transmitter does not accept the new program on the first try, try the programming procedure again, holding the original transmitter at different distances (between 25-152 mm (1-6") and at different angles to the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter
^ Some original transmitters, especially in Canada, may stop transmitting after 1-2 seconds. Programming to these systems will have greater success if the original transmitter is "cycled," or pressed and repressed every 2 seconds until the LED on the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter flashes rapidly
- ROLLING CODES - If the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter appears to learn from the original transmitter but does not open the garage door, and it the garage door opener was built after 1995, the opener may have a new Rolling Code feature. This type of system will change the "code" of the garage door opener every time the garage door is opened or closed. The HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter on vehicles built after October 1996, will work with these systems, but will require an extra step to synchronize with the garage door opener receiver. For vehicles built prior to October 1996, contact the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter Helpline, (800) 355-3515, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM (EST) Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM-6:00 PM (EST) Saturday.
To determine if the garage door opener system is a Rolling Code type, program the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter as described in the Programming Procedure within this article, then depress the button you have just programmed. If the LED flashes rapidly for 1-2 seconds, then remains on, this identifies the garage door opener system as having a Rolling Code.
The garage door opener must now be programmed to recognize the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter.
NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE MUST TAKE PLACE AT THE CUSTOMER'S HOME. IF NECESSARY, A LOCAL DOOR OPENER SERVICE TECHNICIAN IS AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE HOMELINK(R) UNIVERSAL TRANSMITTER HELPLINE, (800) 355-3515, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM (EST) MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AND 10:00 AM-6:00 PM (EST) SATURDAY. SERVICE CHARGES WILL APPLY.
1. Remove the cover panel from the garage door opener receiver. The receiver should be located by the garage door opener motor.
2. Locate the training button on the garage door opener receiver. The exact location and color of the opener may vary by door opener brand. If you have difficulty locating the training button, reference your garage door opener owner's manual, or call HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter Helpline, (800) 355-3515, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM (EST) Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM-6:00 PM (EST) Saturday.
3. Press the training button on the-garage door opener receiver for 1-2 seconds.
4. Return to the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter in the vehicle, and depress the previously programmed button for the duration of the fast blink of the LED (1-2 seconds). Release the button, and re-press to confirm that the system has been trained.
The garage door opener should now recognize the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter. The customer may now use the HomeLink(R) Universal Transmitter or the original transmitter to operate the door.
