LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 TOWN CAR


ISSUE: An intermittent no start or hard start may be caused by loss of coil output. This is due to a poor connection of the 42-way connector.

ACTION: Check the connection at the 42-way connector if normal diagnostics indicate component replacement. Re-check diagnostics to make sure the components are functioning properly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

The 42-way connector connects the 9D930 and 12A581 wire assemblies. It is mounted on the brake booster under the master cylinder and is covered by a plastic shield as shown in figure 1.


1. Unbolt the 42 way connector.

2. Remove the large molded rectangular gasket which seals the connector halves as shown in figure 2. Replace with (14A297) foam gasket.

3. Re-install connector, Tighten to 68-92 lb.in (7.6-10.4 N-m).
