Timing Chain Tensioner: Adjustments

Bleeding

NOTE: The timing chain tensioner cannot be bled down while mounted on the engine assembly. This procedure should only be performed when the timing chains are serviced.

1. Position timing chain tensioner in a soft-jawed vise.

2. Using a small pick or similar tool, hold ratchet lock mechanism away from ratchet stem and slowly compress tensioner plunger by ROTATING vise handle.

CAUTION: The tensioner must be compressed slowly, or damage to the internal seals will result.

3. Once tensioner plunger bottoms in tensioner bore, continue to hold ratchet lock mechanism and PUSH DOWN on ratchet stem until flush with tensioner face.

4. While holding ratchet stem flush to tensioner face, RELEASE ratchet lock mechanism and install a paper clip or similar tool in tensioner body as shown to lock tensioner in collapsed position.

NOTE: Paper clip must not be removed until timing chain, tensioner, tensioner arm, and timing chain guide are completely installed on engine.
