REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONInstrument Panel
Mark VII
Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Disconnect all underhood electrical connectors of main wiring harness (14401) (Fig. 1). Disengage rubber grommet from dash panel and feed harness and connectors into passenger compartment.

3. Remove steering column opening trim cover (Fig. 2).
4. Remove steering column opening trim cover steel reinforcement (Fig. 2).

5. Remove LH and RH sound insulator assemblies from under instrument panel.
6. Remove LH and RH cowl trim panels (Fig. 3).
NOTE: Remove two screws attaching hood release to cowl panel before removing LH trim panel.

7. Remove five steering column trim shroud screws and remove shrouds.
8. Disconnect all electrical connections (quick couplers from the steering column switches) (Fig. 4).

9. Remove four nuts attaching steering column to brake pedal support. Lower steering column to rest on the seat cushion (Fig. 5).

10. Remove screw attaching defroster opening grille panel to instrument panel and remove grille assembly (Fig. 6).
NOTE: Grille has three retaining tabs holding it in position.
11. Remove screws attaching floor console to instrument panel and floor, and move console rearward. Refer to the 1984 Car Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 45-31.
12. Remove one screw attaching instrument panel to floor. Remove two screws attaching instrument panel to cowls (Fig. 6). Remove nut attaching instrument panel to steering column support bracket (Fig. 6, View A).

13. Disconnect the main harness in the following areas (Fig. 8):
a. Behind instrument panel.
b. RH side of steering column support.
c. At blower motor.
d. RH cowl panel.
NOTE: 5.0L shown, 2.4L similar.

14. Disconnect radio antenna lead from radio. Disconnect any vacuum hoses attached to instrument panel.
15. Remove RH and LH A-pillar garnish mouldings (Fig. 7).

16. Remove three screws attaching instrument panel to dash panel and remove instrument panel (Fig. 6).
17. With instrument panel removed from vehicle, transfer all components, wiring and attaching hardware to new instrument panel, if necessary.
18. To install, reverse Steps 1 through 17. After installing instrument panel, check all components to assure proper operation.
NOTE: When reinstalling steering column to support bracket, tighten the four attaching nuts to 28-50 N-m (20-37 lb.ft.).
