TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - ZF 4 SPEED OVERDRIVE, REVISED TRANSMISSION CONTROL LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 CONTINENTAL - 2.4L DIESEL ENGINE AND ZF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

In the event any service to the ZF automatic is performed on the subject vehicles the following revised linkage adjustment procedure should be used. In addition to applying the standard (8) pounds weight at the column mounted gear shift lever during linkage adjustment procedure, a (4) pound weight is also to be hung from the point the column rod joins to the bellcrank lever.

Manual Linkage Column Shift

1. Place selector lever in the Overdrive "D" position tight against the Overdrive stop. A 3.6 KG (8 lb.) weight should be hung on the selector lever to be sure the lever remains against the Overdrive stop during the linkage adjustment.

2. Raise vehicle on hoist then remove the shift rod adjusting stud nut and remove shift rod from stud (Figure 11).
3. Shift the transmission into Overdrive "D" by rotating the transmission manual lever (7A258) three detents from the most counterclockwise position.
4. Make sure that the selector lever has not moved from the Overdrive stop.
5. Hang 4 lb. weight from bellcrank lever at point it joins the column rod (at point indicated by decal on the bellcrank lever) (Figure 11).
6. Reinstall the shift rod on the adjusting stud and tighten the nut to 14-27 N-m (10-20 ft.lbs.).
