Refer to ``Diesel Engine Performance Specifications'' at the front of this manual for specified injection pump timing.
1. With transmission in Park, start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Open cover on diagnostic connector, Fig. 2, and install adapter from dynamic timing gauge Rotunda model 078-00116 or equivalent.
3. Check pump timing with engine running. If timing is not as specified, proceed as follows:
a. Stop engine, then rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke.
b. Remove injection pump distributor head bolt and sealing washer, then install adapter D84P-9000-D and Rotunda tool 014-00420 or equivalent onto injection pump, following tool manufacturer's instructions. The plunger portion of adapter must project into injection pump sufficiently to contact the pump plunger.
c. Install suitable dial indicator into adapter, ensuring that there is at least a .100 inch preload on dial indicator.
d. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until dial indicator displays lowest value, then zero indicator.
e. Continue to rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC of compression stroke, then install TDC aligning pin, Fig. 3, to secure crankshaft in position.
f. On timing belts with less than 10,000 miles of use, dial indicator reading should be .0256 inch. On timing belts with more than 10,000 miles of use, the indicator reading should be .0248 inch.
4. If reading obtained is not as specified, rotate injection pump clockwise to increase reading, or counterclockwise to decrease reading on dial indicator.
5. After adjustment is completed, torque rear, then front injection pump mounting bolts to 7 ft. lbs.
