6HP26 6-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION -
SERVICE TIPS
LINCOLN:
2005 Navigator
ISSUE
The 2005 Navigator is equipped with an all-new transmission, the 6-speed 6HP26.
ACTION
Review this TSB for service tips about this transmission and information on the service plan, which will be launched in two phases.
SERVICE TIPS
^ The 6HP26 transmission uses Motorcraft Mercon SP transmission fluid.
NOTE
MERCON, MERCON V, AND MERCON SPARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, DO NOT MIX.
^ The 6HP26 transmission is not equipped with a dipstick. Procedures for checking the transmission fluid level are provided in the Workshop Manual.
^ Under normal operating conditions in the United States and Canada, fluid and filter replacement are not required until 150,000 miles. In severe operating conditions, or outside the US and Canada, the maintenance guide should be consulted.
PHASE / SERVICE PLAN
Beginning with vehicle introduction, through late first quarter 2005, 6HP26 repairs will be limited to minor repairs and transmission replacement. The Phase I service plan includes:
^ Availability of 28 service parts that do not require transmission disassembly. Phase I parts include seals, gaskets, valve body/control module (Mechatronic unit), pan/filter assembly, etc. (see Parts for Phase I Service). Most of these repairs can be performed with the transmission in the vehicle.
^ More extensive repairs will require a transmission exchange, coordinated by the Ford National Technical Hotline. All dealers that are NOT Level 1 are required to call the Hotline for prior approval. Follow existing prior approval program guidelines and procedures.
^ Essential Special Service Tools (ESSTs) needed for Phase I repairs, and most Phase II repairs, have already been shipped to dealerships.
^ Phase I diagnostic and repair training is available through 2005 Expedition/Navigator New Model Technician Training (30N29F0) on FORDSTAR.
^ At vehicle launch electronic versions of the Workshop Manuals and Wiring Diagrams will support Phase I diagnostics and repair.
^ Labor operation times will be available by the end of 2004.
