Exhaust System: Service and Repair

Exhaust System Alignment
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Loosen all exhaust component fasteners and clamps from the exhaust manifolds to the muffler inlet pipe.

3. NOTE: Make sure the exhaust isolators are not torn, damaged or binding.

Beginning at the front of the vehicle, align the exhaust system to establish the maximum clearance. Make sure that all slip fit pipes are pushed all the way into the preceding pipe and the notches are correctly lined up with the tabs.
4. Begin at the front of the vehicle. For torque specifications, refer to Specifications.
Tighten all the fasteners in the following order:
^ Tighten the RH lower catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nut.
^ Tighten the RH upper catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nut.
^ Tighten the transmission mount hanger bolt.
^ Tighten the exhaust clamp nut.
^ Alternately tighten the LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts, to avoid an exhaust leak.
Install and snug the LH inner nut up.
Tighten the LH outer nut to specification.
Tighten the LH inner nut to specification.
^ Tighten the catalytic converter-to-muffler bolts.
5. Start the engine and check the exhaust system for leaks.
