Removal

WARNING: To prevent glass splinters from entering the eyes or cutting hands, wear safety glasses and heavy gloves when cutting the glass from the vehicle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

1. Remove the rear quarter trim panel.
2. Remove the wiring harness brackets.

3. NOTE: The locating tabs need to be cut through in order to remove the rear quarter window glass. The new rear quarter window glass will be equipped with new locating tabs.

Lubricate the urethane adhesive with water to aid the special tool when cutting.

4. Using the special tool, cut the urethane adhesive from the quarter window glass starting at the top center and working toward the bottom corners and remove the rear quarter window glass.

Installation

CAUTION: After installing the urethane installed glass, the vehicle should not be driven until the urethane adhesive has cured. For Essex 400-HV, the curing time at temperatures above 13°C (55°F) and relative humidity above 50% is 12-24 hours. Refer to the Essex drive away chart time for the cure time as temperatures and humidity vary. Inadequate curing of the urethane adhesive will adversely affect the strength of the urethane bond.

1. Dry fit the quarter window glass, making alignment marks with tape or a non-staining grease pencil.

2. CAUTION: Do not scratch the pinch weld area.

Trim the remaining urethane adhesive on the pinch weld area to within specification. The existing urethane surface should be smooth and free of cuts and contamination.

3. CAUTION: Use caution when applying Essex U-413. Apply a light amount of the primer. Too much primer will run and damage the painted surface.

Use a wool applicator to apply Essex U-413 to any exposed metal in the pinch weld area. Allow 6-10 minutes to dry.

4. Clean the inside of the quarter window glass encapsulation rim surface with an alcohol-free cleaner. Be sure the area is clean.

5. CAUTION: Do not allow urethane glass prep Essex U-401 to dry on the glass. Wipe off immediately after application.

Apply urethane glass prep Essex U-401 twice around the glass surface to be urethaned.

6. Apply urethane glass primer Essex U-402 to the same area that was prepped in the previous step. Allow 5 minutes to dry.

7. Trim the urethane applicator tip to specification.
8. Open at least one of the vehicle door glass windows to reduce the possibility of air pressure forcing the urethane applied glass out of position when closing doors.

9. Use caution when applying urethane adhesive. Apply to the outside edges of the locating tabs on the glass surface. Apply a uniform bead of urethane adhesive Essex 400-HV. Start at the bottom center and work all the way around the rear quarter window glass.
10. Install the quarter window glass, aligning it to the marks previously made.
11. Install the wiring harness brackets.
12. Install the rear quarter trim panel.
